Gate College

Solar Project at the Gates Institute of Technology, Gooty, Andhra Pradesh.
Gate CollageIn one of its most significant solar projects, Su-Kam has enabled an entire educational institution to free itself from dependence on the electricity grid.

Gooty is a small town 300 km. south of Hyderabad, where the grid supply is very poor. This is home to the Gates Institute of Technology, an engineering college for 1400 students. Uninterrupted, steady, clean supply of electricityis essential, not just for classrooms and offices, but also sensitive equipment in laboratories, electronic devices and computers. When faced with the unreliable power situation, the college authorities knew they needed an innovative solution to their problem. So, they turned to Su-Kam.

Gate CollageSu-Kam's engineers conducted a site and technical survey and determined that the optimal solution would be a solar power plant of 100 KW and storage requirement in a battery bank of 20 KW. Since the batteries are the recurring cost, the Su-Kam team managed to minimise the cost, by deciding that the power backup requirement at night time load would be minimal, so storage of only 20KW energy would be needed.

The Su-Kam team got into action and installed a 100 KW bidirectional rooftop solar power plant. The design, engineering and installation were all done in-house. From March 2011, when the solar power plant was commissioned, the Gates Institute has been running solely on solar power, with zero dependence on the electric grid. The positive impact on the environment is enormous.

Gate CollageThis is a pioneering project, the first of its kind in Andhra Pradesh, showing the path for other homes and institutions to follow. Su-Kam has successfully demonstrated that clean, green solar energy is the most intelligent and progressive path to follow, even when the energy requirement is high. No dependence on the grid, no power cuts or voltage fluctuations, no load on the country's power resources. Best of all, the environment is protected for all time to come.
